Spotlight on Bilboquet! Hailed as 2018 Designed of the Year by Wallpaper magazine, Canadian designer Philippe Malouin has carved his path through the world of industrial design across the planet, from his London-based studio. He uses a form of purist expressionism, which both surprises and seduces with its ingenious geometric combinations. Don't be fooled by its simple appearance — the Bilboquet has a big personality! This entirely adjustable lamp allows you to direct light in a fun and precise way. Inspired by magnetic joints, Bilboquet offers a full range of movement for a variety of functions. This lamp is composed of two separate cylinders - a spotlight and a base - connected by a magnetic sphere. The spotlight magnetically attaches to the magnetic steel ball that tops the base: It can be styled into an infinite array of positions and directions. The light can thus be adjusted in any direction. The body, cable, switch, and plug are all in the same colour, creating a minimalistic look. The Bilboquet lamp has been developed into a fresh and modern colour palette: Linen, Sage, Tomato. The cable can be adjusted and locked off by a slot added for this purpose into the base of the lamp. The versatile Bilboquet meets a range of lighting needs, for work or downtime. It can be used as a work lamp on a desk, to create a soft glow on a wall, or as a reading lamp, directed over a good book. The Bilboquet lamp has been designed to last. Each of the main components can easily be repaired or replaced. As for the paint and the treatment on the metal base, they meet sustainability requirements. The product is designed in line with ISCC standards, and is assembled without any glued components, so that it can be entirely separated for future recycling. Philippe Malouin explains: "Simple in appearance yet full of big personality, Bilboquet is an adjustable table lamp that allows for light to directed in a fun yet precise way. Fixed in place by magnetic joints, the Bilboquet offers a variety of movements and functions. Whether it's used on a desk, to create a soft glow on a wall, or to act as a reading light, it shines the light where it's needed."
I love this little desk lamp for its modern, minimalist vibe and practical flexibility. The beige plastic finish keeps it neutral enough to blend seamlessly into various interiors, from Scandi and contemporary to more eclectic schemes. Its adjustable head makes it perfect for task lighting, whether on a desk, bedside table, or even in a reading nook. Stylistically, it works well paired with both warm wood tones and sleek, modern materials. For styling tips, try layering it with other functional accessories or placing it alongside textured lampshades and soft textiles to create a balanced, inviting look. Its simple form and versatility make it a smart choice for those looking to add an unobtrusive yet functional lighting solution.
