Since the early 2000s, the work of brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec has emerged as one of the most representative of the dynamism of French design. They've created, especially for Hay, an elegant outdoor furnishings collection using steel. The comprehensive Balcony collection includes multiple items that let you compose a dining or relaxation area in your garden or on your terrace, as well as in public places. Oozing aesthetic harmony, the Balcony collection is characterised by a strong graphic signature: Symmetrical holes strewn across the surface of seating and tables. Offering a lightweight visual, these multiple holes emphasise the volumes and cavities, asserting the collection's graphical identity. They also create a play of light, projecting shadows onto surrounding surfaces. The particularly straight lines of the furniture are softened by the rounded edges and multiple holes. These holes also play a practical role: They make the structure physically lighter, meaning the furniture is easier to handle and allowing water to run off it. Each piece in the Balcony collection is made using powder-coated steel, with a double anti-corrosion treatment providing high resistance against bad weather. The chair, chaise longue, armchair, and lounge chair can be stacked (by 12). For optimal comfort, you can accessorise all of the Balcony chairs with seat cushions, sold separately.
I love this chair for its sleek, minimalist appeal and practicality. Its steel construction makes it incredibly durable and perfect for outdoor or balcony use, especially in casual or modern settings. The stacking feature is a real plus for easy storage when not in use, making it ideal for smaller spaces or for hostings with varying guest numbers. It works well in industrial or contemporary interiors, but can also add a cool contrast in eclectic or Scandinavian-style spaces. To style it, consider pairing with colourful cushions or throws for comfort, or pair with a wooden or glass table for a balanced, pared-back look. Its simple, functional design keeps it versatile and timeless in almost any setting.
