For styling, keep the top surface clear except for one or two statement items, such as a sculptural vase or a simple table lamp, to avoid clutter. Use the open shelf for neatly grouped baskets or boxes to hide remotes and cables, and add a trailing plant on one side to soften the lines. Norfolk pine or a rubber plant works well, bringing a touch of green against the rich brown tones.
