Description

Sculptural and glossy like a gem, the Aspide lamp presents a sinuous silhouette reminiscent of a serpent. This jointed lamp is flexible and modular, and can be transformed and adjusted to however you like, or need, your lighting. Its silhouette changes as you interact with it. The Aspide lamp was designed in 1970 by Italian designer Gianfranco Frattini (1926 - 2004). It doesn't look like any other lamp, whilst also magnificently representing its era. Aspide is both an industrial design piece with functionality at its essence and an irresistibly playful and modern design expression. The body of the lamp is composed of curved iron tubes with joints that allow for the collar and head to continuously turn around their axis by up to 350°, giving the user the option of easily controlling the light in their space. A counterweight housed in the base makes sure that the lamp is stabilised and doesn't tip over in any position. The sparkling chrome-finish covering gives Aspide a mirrored surface that reflects light. This lamp is both cheeky and precious, demonstrating that, in Frattini's hands, glamour and fantasy and coexist in a single piece. The Aspide table lamp was designed as a work or reading lamp, which can be turned towards the wall to create a softer, ambient light. Gianfranco Frattini has left an everlasting mark on the landscape of modern Italian design over his career, spanning 50 years, as he demonstrated a tireless passion for materials, meticulous attention to functional detail, and a profound admiration of artisan and construction methods. Revolutionary lighting designs were refined with incredible modernity.

Our Stylist Says

The Aspide table lamp is a sleek, contemporary piece with a nod to the iconic design language of the 1970s, making it perfect for adding a touch of retro-modern cool to various interiors. I love its adjustable arm, which offers both functionality and form, making it ideal for task lighting on desks or side tables. Its polished metal finish lends a sense of understated sophistication, so it works well in minimalist schemes, industrial spaces, or even eclectic setups where a sculptural element is needed. To style it effectively, consider pairing it with clean-lined furniture and keeping surrounding surfaces uncluttered to let its sleek silhouette stand out. This lamp is equally versatile as a statement piece or a functional accent in living rooms, offices, or bedside areas.
