In a time before colours could be captured visually through photography, scientists used vivid descriptions to identify them, drawing reference from elements of nature. Werner’s 1814 book of colour charts Nomenclature of Colours, which forms part of the Natural History Museum’s rare books collection, was a pioneering work that visualised colour through the vibrancy of birds and butterflies, the shades of flowers and fruit and the tones of precious gems. This classification of colour helped narrate an age of exploration, allowing Charles Darwin to tell a visual tale of his famous 1830s voyage upon HMS Beagle. It is the richness of both colour and language that has been cherished by naturalists for over two centuries and has inspired The Origins of Colour collection, which reimagines the colours of nature for your home. © The Trustees of the Natural History Museum, London 2026. Our Stylist Says

I love this sofa for its soft chenille fabric and compact, inviting silhouette-perfect for creating a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. It works well in both traditional and contemporary interiors, especially those with neutral or earthy tones, given its warm, understated colour. To style it effectively, consider pairing it with textured cushions or throws in contrasting colours or patterns to add visual interest. Practical tips include placing it in a living room with plenty of natural light to enhance its plush texture, and pairing it with a simple coffee table or side tables for functionality without cluttering the space. Its versatile size makes it ideal for smaller rooms or as part of a larger seating arrangement, and the neutral tone ensures it will blend seamlessly with a variety of colour schemes and decor styles.
