Originally intended for the Paimio Sanatorium, the black Armchair 42 was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1932.Often referred to as 'Small Paimio', this fluid chair has been expertly crafted to create a timeless design that would complement any space. Devoid of straight lines, the cantilevered chair features a frame crafted from laminated birch, as well as the black lacquered seat and back crafted from one piece of form-pressed plywood. To ensure the frame's longevity, its two armrests are crafted from a single piece of wood that is then split in half, in turn ensuring that the chair remains perfectly balanced as it ages. Alvar Aalto was one of the founding members of Finnish manufacturer, Artek, and embraced strong individuality with focus on designing predominantly for humanity, creating functional and dynamic pieces for public and personal spaces alike.
