Arne Jacobsen is a Danish Modernist architect famous around the world. He designed the AJ lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Collection) in 1957. The AJ series is today regarded as the model that made the Danish architect known all around the world. Arne Jacobsen not only designed the hotel down to the last detail for the airline SAS, but also designed almost all the hotel’s original furnishings and fittings. The profile of the AJ lamp, with its straight lines and its combination of oblique and straight angles, is an assumed reference to the profile of the 3300 range of armchairs, as well as the geometric lines of the architect's buildings. The AJ lamp was used in several parts of the hotel in a copper and stainless-steel finish. To mark the 60th anniversary of the opening of the SAS Royal Hotel, AJ lamps are making a comeback in their original stainless-steel finish, which reflects its surroundings, in the spirit of Arne Jacobsen, and highlights the minimalist shape so characteristic of the lamp, as well as its perfect lighting. The lamp emits light directed downwards. The angle of the lampshade can be changed to optimise the lighting. The interior of the lampshade is painted white to make the light softer and more comfortable. A true icon of Scandinavian design, this lamp combines pure, timeless design with excellent lighting qualities. Its vintage style will always look sensational!.
I love this floor lamp for its clean lines and functional design, making it a versatile addition to both modern and minimalist interiors. Its orientable feature is particularly useful for task lighting or creating a cosy ambient glow in living rooms, reading nooks, or home offices. The silver-metal finish adds a sleek, contemporary touch that works well against neutral or monochrome colour schemes, but it can also complement darker or bolder palettes. When styling, consider pairing it with simple furniture pieces and keeping accessories minimal to let the lamp’s sculptural form stand out. To maximise its practicality, place it near a comfy armchair or sofa for effortless reading light, or utilise its adjustability to highlight artwork or architectural features.
