I’m a fan of the Adria bookcase because its clean white frame and warm oak shelves slot seamlessly into Scandinavian, contemporary or minimalist schemes, and even add a friendly touch to a home office. To style it, mix in vertical and horizontal book stacks, a couple of small plants or sculptural objects, and a closed basket or box on one tier to hide clutter. Leave some shelves sparse to avoid a crowded look, and secure it to the wall for safety if you’ve got little ones or pets.

In 1980, Chris Dawson set up a simple open-air market stall in Plymouth.
