The Savoy Vase, also known as the Aalto Vase, was designed in 1936 by Alvar Aalto (1898 – 1976), Finland's most famous architect and designer. He’s also one of the most important pioneers of organic design. A true design icon, this glass vase characterised by its organic shapes has become a classic of Finnish design. It’s one of the most famous glass objects in the world and Iittala's most iconic series. The sinuous shape of the Aalto vase alludes to the designer's last name: aalto means wave in Finnish. These rhythmic, asymmetrical lines express the quintessence of nature and announce the fluid shapes that would be the hallmark of Finnish post-war design. Alvar Aalto's series of glass vases won first prize in the 1936 Karhula-Iittala glass design competition, as well as the 1937 World's Fair in Paris. Compared to decorative objects of the time, the simple yet organic shape of this vase was a revolutionary statement. Each vase in the Alvar Aalto collection is hand-blown, hand-cut and polished at Iittala glassworks in Finland. The Aalto vase is available in a wide range of colours and sizes.
