Created for Finland's University of Jyväskylä, the monochrome A331 'Beehive' Pendant Light was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1953 for his brand Artek. Nicknamed the 'Beehive' after its distinctive shape, the light is one of Aalto's most-favoured designs thanks to its sculptural appearance that always commands attention, even when unlit. The Beehive diffuses an even glow, all while parading a hand-turned shade crafted from delicate, lacquered strips forming concentric circles around the bulb, complete with several rows of perforated chrome-plated steel rings. Requires: 1x max. 12W E27 bulb (not included).Care instructions: Use a soft cloth, dampened with water and soap, or mild cleanser if needed for resistant dirt; do not use alcohol or other solvents. Receive a three-bulb Artek Light Tasting Set with every purchase until 31st January 2022; simply add to the basket with your qualifying light to claim a complimentary set.
I love the Beehive pendant light for its bold, graphic appeal and modern retro vibe. Its strong black and white colour palette makes it versatile enough to work in both contemporary and eclectic interiors. It’s especially effective in kitchens or dining areas where you want a statement piece, but it also brings a playful yet sophisticated touch to more minimalist spaces. Practical styling tips include grouping a few at different heights for visual impact or hanging it over a breakfast bar or island for both function and style. Keep surrounding décor simple to allow the lamp’s distinctive shape and pattern to really stand out.
