The 9602 floor lamp (also called the "Chinese hat") was created by designer Paavo Tynell in 1935 for the Finnish Hotel Aulanko. A great pioneer of Finnish lighting, Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) is fondly known as "the man who lit up Finland". His lamps are highly sought after by collectors around the world and prices for his original pieces have recently soared at auction. The 1902 floor lamp stands out for its superb blend of natural and sophisticated materials as well as the aerial form of its elegant lampshade. The 9602 floor lamp illustrates Paavo Tynell's boundless imagination and unmatched ability to create timeless designs. The beige fabric shade is supported by a foot covered with natural rattan. The base and cover over the lampshade are made of polished brass: they balance the outline. At the top of the foot is a stylish brass push switch with a deliciously retro style.
I love the 9602 floor lamp for its timeless reissue design and versatility. The fabric shade gives it a soft, diffused light that’s perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere, while the white and beige tones neutra lly blend seamlessly into both classic and contemporary interiors. It works particularly well in living rooms, reading nooks, or even bedrooms where a subtle yet sculptural statement piece is needed. Practical styling tips include pairing it with textured textiles or vintage furniture to enhance its retro charm, and positioning it near seating areas to optimise its functional role as a reading or ambient light source. Its understated elegance makes it a reliable choice for elevating a space without overpowering it.
