I’m a fan of this five-shelf wooden bookcase for its clean lines and mixed-material feel - the warm brown timber works brilliantly against the slim black frame. It slots easily into a variety of schemes, from contemporary Scandi and industrial lofts to more traditional or farmhouse-style rooms. For styling, alternate books laid vertically and horizontally, intersperse a few sculptural vases or candles, and add a trailing plant or two to soften the edges. On the lower shelf, woven baskets are great for hiding smaller items, while the top tier is ideal for a simple photo frame or a small piece of art to draw the eye upwards.

In 1980, Chris Dawson set up a simple open-air market stall in Plymouth.
