I’m a fan of this simple wooden picnic table because its clean lines and pale finish slot straight into everything from a laid-back country garden to a pared-back urban terrace. It’s big enough for four yet light enough to move around, and the natural timber will mellow over time to an attractive silvery-grey if left untreated - or stay fresh if you apply a clear oil each season.
To style, layer on washable outdoor cushions in muted stripes or block colour, then top with a neutral runner for picnics and barbecues. Pop a parasol through the centre hole for shade, and scatter a couple of metal lanterns or small potted herbs in terracotta pots along the tabletop. Finish with a weather-proof spray to keep the wood looking its best year after year.
