Description

Designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1934 and now produced by Cassina in a natural ash finish, the iconic 280 Zig-Zag Chair was originally designed for the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht. One of the earliest examples of cantilevered design, the chair sees its normal legs replaced with a single sheet of wood to resemble the letter Z. Expertly crafted using beautifully-grained natural ash wood, the Zig-Zag Chair showcases excellent carpentry with detailed dovetail joints for a sharp finish. Embodying pure abstraction, the chair is widely regarded as one of the most important experimental chairs of its time and is integral to the heritage of the Dutch de Stijl movement. One of the central characters of the de Stijl artistic movement, architect and furniture designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is most renowned for creating the original Red and Blue Chair early in his career. Rietveld went on to design iconic buildings such as the Schröder House in Utrecht and exhibit at the Bauhaus after receiving a personal invitation from its founder Walter Gropius.

Our Stylist Says

I find the zig-zag chair to be a striking piece that works well in contemporary and minimalist interiors, adding a sculptural touch without overwhelming the space. Its natural ash finish offers versatility, pairing nicely with neutral palettes or adding warmth to more colourful schemes. Practical styling tips include pairing it with a simple dining table to highlight its unique shape, or using it as an accent piece in a modern open-plan setting. It's also resilient enough for everyday use, making it as functional as it is decorative. This chair works especially well in Scandinavian-inspired interiors, where its clean lines and organic material can truly shine.
