Description

This stylish dining table is part of the Axel range which crosses old world and industrial with its combination of reclaimed wood from decommissioned Chinese junks and hand-treated metal detailing. After decades of exposure to the high seas and elements, the reclaimed Sassafras hardwood from the hulls, decking, and beams of the Chinese boats reflects uniquely weathered colourations and textures. In addition, original, whole propellers are reused and re-created into one-of-a-kind coffee tables. Each piece tells a story, forming a solid, cohesive collection rife with character and personality. The collection is also a creative conduit for Timothy Oulton's ecological endeavours in conservation and sustainability.

Our Stylist Says

I love this piece for its rugged, reclaimed wood finish that adds character and warmth to a room. It's versatile enough to complement both rustic, industrial, and even more contemporary interiors. The simplicity of its design makes it a great focal point without feeling overwhelming. Practical styling tips include pairing it with mixed-tone chairs, perhaps a set of vintage leather or metal chairs for an eclectic vibe, or keep it minimal with sleek modern pieces for a more pared-back look. This table works particularly well in open-plan dining spaces or kitchens where its sturdy, honest design can be celebrated. Just remember to keep accessories minimal to let the natural beauty of the wood shine through.

About Barker and Stonehouse

Founded in 1946, Barker and Stonehouse offer a diverse range of stylish and timeless pieces. From contemporary to traditional designs, Barker and Stonehouse brings sophistication and comfort to every room.

A Remarkable Journey

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.

Sustainability at the Forefront

From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.

Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.

Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.

Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons

Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.

They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
